Navigating a narrow pathway – can Australia avoid a hard landing?
Inflation is too high and central banks, including the RBA, have been lifting interest rates sharply to deal with it. Growth needs to slow to get inflation back down to central bank targets. But how much will growth slow? In some countries recessions are likely and in some places they have already arrived.
In Australia, the RBA has opted for an approach that seeks to deliver disinflation but also prioritises avoiding an economic recession. Will they be able to navigate this narrow pathway to a soft landing? Or will 2023 be a recession year in Australia too?
