Australian British Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Appointment of Agent-General to the UK
Sydney, Saturday 2 October, 2021
The Australian British Chamber of Commerce welcomes the announcement of Mr Stephen Cartwright OAM as the Agent-General Designate for the United Kingdom and Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner to Europe and Israel, representing the State of New South Wales.
The announcement today by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Industry and Trade, John Barilaro, marks an important step forward in NSW’s engagement in the Trade and Investment relationship with the United Kingdom.
The Australian British Chamber of Commerce has actively lobbied the NSW Government to re-establish the role, which is seen as an important interlocutor for business. It is a clear signal to the UK that the NSW economy is open for business and the relationship is of significant value. The UK is the second largest source of foreign investment in NSW, behind the USA.
Mr Cartwright will bring a breadth of exposure for business in NSW through his previous role as the CEO of the NSW Business Chamber (now Business NSW). In particular, his network will help the drive for Small and Medium enterprises in NSW to export to the UK.
This announcement, which follows on from the NSW Premier’s visit to the UK in 2019, the first visit by a NSW Premier in more than a decade, will give NSW an equal footing in the UK to other States including Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia.
David McCredie OBE, CEO of the Australian British Chamber of Commerce said:
“It has been one of the longest lobbying campaigns run by the Australian British Chamber of Commerce to see this role come back into place. The significance of this role to both NSW businesses looking to operate in the UK and importantly for UK investors looking at Sydney and NSW as an opportunity, cannot be underestimated.
“This step, along with the additional resources applied by NSW to the UK and Europe will open up more opportunities, especially as Australia and the UK look to settle our Free Trade Agreement in the coming months.
“This is an important signal to our friends in the UK that Sydney and NSW are open for business. The strength of our bilateral relationship and our important roles in each other’s regions will bring shared prosperity through the collaborative and valuable connectivity that the Agent-General and their office can provide.
“The Australian British Chamber looks forward to working with Mr Cartwright on
re-establishing the NSW Government’s presence in the UK and maximising the value created through this role. His experience over many years at the NSW business Chamber and the International Chamber of Commerce will hold him in good stead to not only support larger businesses but to maximise the value for SME’s seeking inbound investment and exports to the UK.”
